Maxine Tulloch, Host of the Maxine Tulloch Show
Maxine Tulloch is finally living her lifelong dream of hosting her own talk show. As executive producer of The Maxine Tulloch Show, Ms. Tulloch interviews business professionals, entertainers and various personalities within the Caribbean and American communities. USmile Magazine caught up with Ms. Tulloch to talk about her show and what she hopes to accomplish in the near future.
USM: Can you tell us why you feel you are living your dream?
MT: I always wanted to be a broadcast journalist since I was in high school. My mom thought that I should go into the nursing field. She wanted me to have a stable career. I think she was concerned because there weren’t any blacks on TV at the time so she felt I wouldn’t be successful as a journalist.
USM: What made you decide to start your own show?
MT: I had just completed my masters and was on the radio when someone suggested that I do a pilot of the show. Everyone loved it and that inspired me to go after my dreams.
USM: What do you enjoy most about your job?
MT: I love talking to people from different backgrounds and people who are making a difference in our community.
USM: Tell us about your show?
MT: I have modeled The Maxine Tulloch Show after the Oprah Winfrey Show. I think that she has a proven model that has been successful. The Maxine Tulloch Show will showcase the Caribbean community throughout the U.S. and the Caribbean. The show is unique because there is no one else that is doing what I am doing.
USM: What are some of the challenges as a Caribbean woman in this business?
MT: The main challenges are getting the support of the Caribbean community and acceptance in the central marketplace. It is also very costly to produce and run a television show. Getting advertisers is extremely challenging as well, advertisers don’t respect the fact that the Caribbean community can support their campaigns.
USM: What are some of the things that you want to accomplish that you have not done as yet?
MT: I would like The Maxine Tulloch Show to be on a national network, such as ABC or NBC. I would like to have the show syndicated throughout the Caribbean, Canada and U.K.
USM: Where would you like The Maxine Tulloch Show to be in the long term?
MT: I would like the show to be syndicated throughout the U.S.
USM: Tell us about the project you are currently working on?
MT: I am working on a documentary about Jamaicans doing outstanding things in the community.
USM: How do you balance such a demand career and your personal life?
MT: It is very hard but I am blessed with a supportive partner who understands the demands of my career. We have been married for thirty-three years and I still want to take care of him and fix him dinner. But I don’t really get to fix him dinner as often as I would like.
USM: What would you say to young women who may want to follow in your path?
MT: I would tell them to do their homework, believe in themselves and their abilities, and go for it
USM: How do you manage to keep yourself in shape?
MT: I work out frequently and walk five miles every morning. I am currently training for the Reggae Jamaican marathon on December 4th and Disney marathon on January 11th in Kissimmee, FL.
USM: Do you have any plans to take your show on the road?
MT: I am hoping to take the show on the road in 2011.
